Dear friends,
I was 22 when Reagan was elected, and seven months later AIDS began. I understand the pain, the devastation, and the loss. This is what I have learned:
Focus on concrete actions. Reinforce existing organizations and networks. Be more flexible so you can form coalitions. Be kinder. Reach out, communicate, and build relationships. Learn from the strategies of successful movements of the past, but remember that the solution lies in a vision of the future. Try new tactics. Do not repeat strategies that did not work before. Hold on to your core values; remember that this too shall pass and you will have to face yourself when it is over, so take the long view. Ask other people what they think will help. Don't blame the wrong person for your pain just because they are in front of you.
Love,
Sarah
